EMDR & Sand Play

Both EMDR & Sand play are frequently utilized. Annette Becklund is a level II EMDR clinician.

What is EMDR? According to the EMDR Institute, Inc:

"Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989a, 1989b). Shapiro*s (2001) Adaptive Information Processing model posits that EMDR facilitates the accessing and processing of traumatic memories to bring these to an adaptive resolution. After successful treatment with EMDR, affective distress is relieved, negative beliefs are reformulated, and physiological arousal is reduced. During EMDR the client attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief sequential doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. Therapist directed lateral eye movements are the most commonly used external stimulus but a variety of other stimuli including hand-tapping and audio stimulation are often used (Shapiro, 1991). ."--for more info:  www.emdr.com

What is Sand play? Sand Tray? How can it help someone with Autism/Asperger’s?

Sand play and/or sand tray is a non-verbal therapeutic tool developed by Dr. Margaret Lowenfeld in London, England in the 1920*s.  Sand play therapy is used to facilitate healing through a very safe, non-invasive method of play.  Both children and adults build a scene or "world" in the sand tray.  This offers both the client and therapist a sense of what is going on intra-psychically.  Very often times, what cannot be expressed or worked out in words is readily expressed through the use of sand play.

Therapy “without words” is the ability to process feelings and life events.  Very often times, when someone is upset or anxious, finding the words becomes very difficult.  “Sometimes, there are no words.”  Just because someone demonstrates emotions differently than you, it doesn’t mean that those emotions and feelings are not there.  Sand play offers the opportunity for free expression through the use of symbols.  At times,  sand play has helped an individual to tell his/her story.
